So, to stay out of the weather, we stayed inside and watched the ACC tourney on Saturday. Wake was in the middle of their unlikely run and UNC looked promising against Boston College. Unfortunately for both Amanda and myself, the "bad guys" won both games. But at least we got to watch the games in HD on ESPN, which is a rare treat for us out here.
By Sunday, full fledged "house-i-tosis" had set in, and I was desperate for something indoors to do. We ended up doing a tour of the "Winchester Mystery House" smack in the middle of San Jose. Basically the story goes: In 1884, Sarah Winchester inherited the Winchester fortune (of "the gun that won the west" fame), she was told by a pshycic that to appease the souls of all those killed by Winchester firearms, she must build for the rest of her lives. So she bought a 5 room farmhouse south of San Jose and started building. For the next 30-some years 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, construction continued as Ms. Winchester held nightly seances to let the dead instruct her on what to build next.
When she finally died, the house was a 24000 sqft, 140 room structure that meandered and twisted its way in random and unexpected directions. There were stairs to nowhere, fake windows and doors, and the damage from the 1906 earthquake was never repaired. It made for an interesting tour.
