One minute you're sitting on the couch on a quiet Tuesday night reading a book and watching the Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin special. The next, you're huddled in the hallway wondering when it will finally end. Amazing what can happen in 10 seconds.
It was our first big earthquake - 5.6 - about 10 miles south of Fremont. The largest the area has seen in 5-10 years.
Once we realized what was happening, I screamed "Get the kid". Ben ran to his room, grabbed a hold of him in the crib but amazingly, he never woke up. We waited for the noise to pass. And that was what it mainly was - noise and then the shaking. We initially thought it was a big truck going down the street, then we thought it was an explosion and then we realized it was an earthquake - all in 10 seconds.
We are ok. The house is fine. Nothing broke. But ironically enough, we had just written the check 30 minutes earlier for the concrete that was poured yesterday in the backyard. We haven't seen a crack yet, but I'm curious about morning.
I guess we are true Californians now.
